Red face advice about bodybuilding and drumming skills....

hey guys, i recently entered bodybuilding and i was just wandering if it could have a negative effect on my drumming abilities. Specially on legs, can leg work outs stiffen my leg muscles that i wont be able to play drumming techniques effectively like it could destroy my hip flexors or stiffen my ankles that i can't swivel anymore? or arm workouts hinder wrist motion? my trainer said i really can't avoid leg work outs or else i'd end up like johnny bravo or a duck lol. Are there any death metal drummers out here that's also into bodybuilding? if so pls give me an advice. thanks alot !!!

oh pls excuse my grammar, i i'm not that good at english

yes i do quite a lot of bodybuilding, and i can tell u that it DOES get in the way sometimes...especially in the forearms...after a heavy back workout, i can barely hold the sticks...for legs, not so much, but if u do calf, then u got the same problem...there is no advice i can give u, u have to choose how ur gonna do this..

i can tell you that lifting a lot of weight and not as many repetitions will make your tendons shorter, which means basically, slower, stiffer, i would suggest you train light weight and lots of repetitions..

Bodybuilding will most definitely have an impact on your drumming. There are a few drummers that are able to balance working out and extreme metal drumming (i.e. Tim Yeung, although he's not really a body builder, but very fit) but that's extremely difficult. I used to work out a lot but stopped because I noticed how much my drumming suffered.

Hey man i was doing kick boxing for some years, NO body building AT ALL.

It was very helpful and my muscles were never tensed.

I would advise you when you finish your workout to follow a full program of muscles cool-down/recovery and stretching

How about something not as hardcore, like soccer?
because I just recently joined soccer to get some exercise
but I don't want my drumming to get worse.
Basically we just stretch, run around and do drills, do duck walks,
and sometimes we work on upperbody stuff.

to a certain point that could be really good for your heart/bloodsystem and breathing, it will keep you in shape which is a nice extra to drummers.. i dont think it will affect your drumming negatively unless you sore your muscles a lot, but in a month you kind of get used to do both in one day anyway..

Basketball works for me. It works on all parts of the body. I always play a game before I have a gig or an intense jam. It's the perfect warm up for me.

Soccer is a great way to equally exercise your body. Recently my local newspaper did an article about drumming and it said that average "rock drummers" who play for 45 minutes a day will get half the same workout as a minor to semi professional soccer player. Makes me wonder what an extreme metal drummer gets if they play for 45 minutes a day. By no means am I muscular other than my leg muscles and forearms. I weigh 135lbs and have had the same wight for the past 4 years. My doctor says I'm really healthy for a person who doesn't go out for sports or workout. I'd like to think that drumming has had something to do with this.

Soccer can get pretty intense if you play with the right type of people and it's a good way to match running, breathing control and limb coordination all into one game.

Is Jade from Hate Eternal slow or Hellhammer? Don't think so...

I think every kind of sports will help you to get a better feeling for your body. Don't forget cardio work and to rest and listen to you body - as the others said - after a hard workout you maybe wont be able to blast 400 bpm but maybe the day after...

Also if you take it serious - check your nutrition... you will need a plan there as well to get the best results and best recovery.

If you say bodybuilding - what do you understand under this topic?
